This week we had some pretty interesting characters step into class! Dracula, the ‘seasonally confused woman’, and some lady from “Who-ville”. It was dress up week at Head Start AND we had a special guest, my sister in law Lisa, all the way from Ontario. She even participated with us and tied for a win in table topics with Rathlin and Meaghan!
I want to congratulate HAZEL on pushing through her discomfort this week and being super brave! She found Brook’s Improv Game “Headlines” kind of hard but she still TRIED and got better with every round! AND, she came up with one of the most insightful observations from our lesson on expressing what our senses perceive! Well done Hazel!
We also had first time speeches from Josh (who gave us a GREAT example of how competitive he is with a funny story!) from Coen (with an interesting speech about his trip to Keats Island) and Jake (who, even though he forgot his speech managed to pull off a pretty impressive presentation with great eye contact!)
Our lesson this week was about bringing ALL of our senses into our presentations and we all imagined being at a candy shop and talking about what we saw, smelled, tasted, felt and heard. It was so colourful! Then we imagined a locker room and it was so stinky! Hazel was the one who imagined the sweaty dirty sock smell and THAT’S exactly what we were going for!
Next week our MC is going to be SARA, who is jumping right in! Way to go!
We will have presentations from COEN (2 weeks in a row! wow!) and NIGEL and they will be doing CHALLENGE # 2! Nigel is the first person to do the Advanced challenge so I am super psyched to see what he comes up with!
Our Table Topics Curator will be JAKE.
Class Clown is JOSH.
MEG is our Quizzer.
Word of the day will be a tandem effort between MEAGHAN and HAZEL.
DAPHNE will be our Improv leader! Way to go Daphne!
BROOK will be our timer.
I also think that we need to extend class by 10-15 minutes as we never seem to have enough time to finish!
Gibsons ROCKED it this week! Georgia channelled all that awesome energy into being MC this week and did a great job. We had speeches from Oskar, who looked really solid today and Max, who told us about the time he found a slug in his shoe the hard way!
I want to commend the Gibsons class on their enthusiasm and their creativity in our Senses lesson. I LOVED all the creative answers we got as we pretended to be in a candy shop, then a locker room and then their favourite restaurants! The KEY is in the DETAILS! Instead of saying the food was yummy, the detail “it was spicy on my tongue” brought it to life! Or, “plates were cold on my hands as I set the table and the spoons clanged loudly in the drawers”. You can FEEL and HEAR that and people can feel and hear that WITH you and THIS is how you CONNECT with your audience!!!! You guys were GREAT!
Iris brought in a VERY challenging Improv game and it REALLY took an effort from everyone to make it work. It seemed that when people jumped in too fast, we kept dropping the ball, but if we hung back and listened a little more and let other people take a turn, we did amazingly WELL!
Next week our MC will be MADELINE. Rock and roll girl.
JONAH will be our Table Topics Curator and let’s keep the questions to no more than 6.
LIINA will bring in a Word of the Day. (By the way Liina, GREAT volume on your table topics this week!!!)
OSKAR will be our Class Clown.
GEORGIA will be our quizzer.
Our timer will be IRIS.
LUCY will be our Improv Leader!
Presentations will be from BRANDALYN (Challenge 1) and SIMON (Advanced) and BELLA(Rookie) will be doing Challenge #2!
I also want to put this little bug in your ear that Public Speaking will once again be a part of the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts in the spring of 2017 and you are ALL welcome to participate! There are even TWO $50 cash awards available! Something to think about!
